Stuck up, stuck down, or humming and going nowhere.
Power trim is a small electric motor and a hydraulic pump bolted to the outside of the engine, where salt water lives. When it quits, it is usually electrical, sometimes hydraulic, and almost always fixable at the dock.
Nothing happens, or a click: a trim relay or solenoid, a blown fuse, a corroded connection at the trim motor, or a bad switch at the helm. A single click with no movement is usually a relay or a motor drawing too much current.
It hums but doesn't move, or moves slowly: low hydraulic fluid, air in the system, or a worn pump. Fluid that leaked out through a tired ram seal has to be replaced and the system bled.
It goes up but not down, or drifts down on its own: a stuck valve or a leaking internal seal in the trim ram. The engine will not hold position, which is a safety problem when you are trailering or tied up.
Keep hands and tools clear of the engine when someone else is pressing the trim switch. It moves with real force.
If the engine drifts down when trimmed up, or won't hold trim, don't trailer it that way. An engine that drops on its own can hit the road or the ramp. Use the manual release and a trailer support, then call. We test the electrical side and the hydraulic side at the dock.
We test the switch circuit, the relays, and the trim motor's current draw, then the hydraulic side: fluid, the pump, and the ram seals. Most trim jobs are a relay, a motor, or a seal and fluid service done at the dock the same day.
Regular hours (6am–4pm): a $200 diagnostic visit. We come to the boat, find the actual cause, and quote parts and labor before any work starts. After hours, Sundays and holidays: a $295 call-out. Parts, labor and sales tax always show as separate lines on the invoice, so you can see exactly what you paid for.
Can I trim the engine by hand if the motor is dead?
Yes. Every outboard has a manual release valve, usually a screw on the trim bracket. Open it, lift the engine by hand or with a strap, and close it. Use the tilt lock or a support before trailering.
Why did the trim quit right after the boat sat for a while?
Corrosion. The trim motor and its connections sit at the waterline. A few months of salt air on an unused connection is often all it takes.
Is trim fluid the same as engine oil?
No. It is a specific power trim and tilt fluid, or an automatic transmission fluid the maker approves. The wrong fluid damages seals.
Dock, lift, marina, driveway or storage lot — we come to the boat across Southwest Florida:
Text us the engine and what the trim does or doesn't do. We carry relays, common trim motors and fluid for Yamaha, Mercury and Suzuki.
